Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi inaugurated the ‘Global Millets (Sri Anna) Conference’ in New Delhi
Kathmandu. The Indian Embassy in Kathmandu participated virtually in the inauguration of the ‘Global Millets-Sri Anna Conference’ held in New Delhi by the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi today on 4th Chaitra 2079 and broadcasted the ceremony live.
The conference was organized on the occasion of the International Year of Millets – 2023 (International Year of Millets – 2023).
In the program held at the Embassy, the Secretary of the Ministry of Industry, Commerce and Supply of the Government of Nepal Madhu Kumar Marasini, Mr. Ken Shimuzu, Representative of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) for Nepal and Bhutan, representatives of the Agriculture Industry and Agriculture Organization and members of the Indian community were present. was
At the conference held in Delhi, Prime Minister Modi released postage stamps and coins bearing the (IYM)-2023. On that occasion, he declared ICAR-IIMR (Indian Council of Agricultural Research -Indian Institute of Millets Research) as ‘Global Center of Excellence in Millets Research’.
In order to promote the importance of millet crops in food security, nutrition and climate balance, on March 5, 2021, the United Nations General Assembly declared the year 2023 as the International Year of Millet Crops. In the General Assembly, Bangladesh, Kenya, Nepal, Nigeria, Russia and Senegal, along with India, presented a resolution regarding the International Millet Crop Year and that resolution was supported by more than 70 member states of the United Nations.
The Government of India has joined hands with various stakeholders to promote the International Millet Crop Year-2023 as a public campaign and to establish India as a hub of millet crops through various programs and activities within the country and outside the country throughout this year.
After the inauguration of the conference, the guests and participants of the program enjoyed the taste of various dishes made from millet.
